WEEK 1 – A BEGINNING OF MANY BEGINNINGS

PREPARATION

Pre-Read: Ursula K. Le Guin 1986. The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction

Pre-Task: Taking inspiration from Ursula, we would like you to pack your own carrier bag to begin your journey with us. It should contain two things:

A seed: We will cultivate a garden of skills and knowledges to be shared and cross-pollinated. Through mutual care, we will grow into a community of practitioners that learn from each other. Seeds are containers of beginnings, wishes to be spread on a field. We ask you to think of the seeds you have to offer this course: skills, experiences, knowledges, maps, ideas...

A star: Stars are contained by the sky and in themselves contain worlds yet to be discovered – just as this course may contain many things as of yet undiscovered to you. We ask you to pack one star-like thing, that you can just about conceive of, but not quite reach. What will be driving your enquiries and explorations? Do you have a map that might guide you towards a new place? Are you searching for travel companions or food for thought?

DAY 1

GROUNDING IN THE FOREST

We traveled to Beckenham Place Park, on the South-Eastern outskirts of London. On our way there we listened to this sonic meditation to start tuning into different ways of being.

We explored the forest in different ways:

Looking at and mapping out how the forest provides for different species

Communing with the forest through principles of The Honourable Harvest

DAY 2

THE CARRIER BAG THEORY OF FICTION

We discussed Ursual K LeGuin's Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction and drew out principles that will underpin our work together. You can find our thoughts on this Collaborative White Board.
